Daly City Youth Health Center Fundraiser Breakfast 11-4-2014

This morning, NCPP and Asian American Recovery Services (a program of HealthRIGHT 360) staff attended the Daly City Youth Health Center fundraiser breakfast at Outback Steakhouse in Daly City.  Many partner agencies were also in attendance, including: Daly City Library & Recreation Services; and Jefferson Union High School District teachers, counselors, board members, and administrators.  NCPP and HealthRIGHT 360 is proud to support the work of our partners in providing comprehensive sexual health education and services, as well as basic medical clinic needs for youth.

BTC Attends San Mateo Friday Night Live Open House 10-20-2014

Be The Change (BTC) youth council joined other San Mateo Friday Night Live (FNL) chapters at the Open House event on Monday 10/20/2014 at Sequoia High School in Redwood City.  Other FNL chapters included youth from East Palo Alto (Youth EPA), Redwood City (Project Voice), and Sequoia High (The REAL).  Youth Leadership Institute staff facilitated the event and provided networking opportunities for the youth to meet each other.

First reading of the Social Host Ordinance draft policy at Daly City Council meeting 10-13-2014

Members of Be The Change (BTC) youth council, NCPP staff, and community partners attended the October 13th meeting of the Daly City Council to be present and provide comments for the first reading of the Social Host Ordinance (SHO) draft policy in Daly City.  Since BTC’s presentation to the Daly City Council on June 16th, 2014 of their Findings & Recommendations report from the 2013 Youth Access Survey in Jefferson Union High School District (JUHSD), Mayor David Canepa had become interested in addressing the issue of a high percentage of youth reporting underage drinking occurring in their home, or the home of their friend, and how oftentimes parents are unaware that underage drinking is taking place in their home.  In the past few months since BTC presented to City Council, Mayor Canepa consulted with NCPP for more information about SHO, and worked with the City Attorney and Daly City Police Department to develop a draft policy of the ordinance.

This evening marked a small victory in the process, as City Council voted 4-1 to approve the revision of the SHO with higher and more clearly outlined fee minimums in an effort to serve as a strong deterrent for parents who may be hosting underage drinking parties in their home.  Please stay tuned for updates on when the SHO policy revision will be presented once again to Daly City Council in the near future.

San Mateo County AOD Partnerships Quarterly Meeting in East Palo Alto 8-21-2014

NCPP staff attended the quarterly meeting of the San Mateo County funded Alcohol & Other Drug (AOD) partnerships yesterday to discuss and brainstorm the adoption of an alcohol retail signage campaign initiated by the Drug-Free Communities funded Saving Lives Coalition from Southern California.  Representatives from the San Mateo AOD partnerships weighed in about adding additional languages and tailoring the sign’s messaging and format to suit the communities we serve in San Mateo County.  This is the start of a great effort to improve communication and relationships with alcohol merchants to prevent youth access to alcohol at the retail level.
