YOUTH: BOOF Presents to NCPP 5-30-2012

Youth from Betting On Our Future (BOOF) presented once again at the NCPP General meeting on 5/30/12.  Alex, who presented at the June 2011 NCPP General Meeting at the Boys & Girls Club of South San Francisco, returned with his peers to present a continuation of their past work with exploring problem gambling among teens in Daly City.  This time around, the BOOF youth screened a video they made in collaboration with Youth Leadership Institute and Baycat on payday lending practices at two local casinos: Lucky Chances (Colma), and Artichoke Joes (San Bruno).  The videos critically examine how payday lending targets and affects lower income communities of color, and yet still remains a legal practice despite astronomical interest rates.  Check out the following links to view both videos.

Behind the Smiles is a forum by the Filipino Mental Health Initiative, in collaboration with the Autism Hearts Foundation to raise awareness of health issues in the Filipino community. Health issues from mental illness to substance abuse are often hidden and ignored in the Filipino community. The goal of Behind the Smiles will be to educate and provide resources for those within the community, by overcoming the stigma of looking for help.

COMMUNITY: FMHI 1st 2012 Meeting 1-12-2012

The Filipino Mental Health Initiative (FMHI) had its first meeting of 2012 at the Pilipino Bayanihan Resource Center at 2121 Junipero Serra Blvd, in Daly City.  FMHI is working to address the heavy stigma around mental health issues within the Filipino community, as well as developing best practices to engage the community so that the barriers to awareness, education, and treatment of mental health issues can be overcome.

The highlight of the meeting was viewing a short film made by students from San Francisco State University about depression and stigma around mental health issues in the Filipino community.  A very rich discussion followed among FMHI participants afterward.

For more information about FMHI, please contact Laarni San Juan at:  fmhi2006@yahoo.com

FMHI’s next monthly meeting will take place at PBRC on February 9th, 2012 from 3:30pm-5pm.  All are welcome.
