ANNOUNCEMENT: YLI Youth of Color Forum on Thu August 22, 2013

The Youth Leadership Institute and YO! Mateo would like to invite youth of color to a unique community event:

  • FREE food, drinks and giveaways.
  • YO! Mateo Are We Sweet Enough? is holding a community forum for youth of color to discuss the new Sugar Sweetened Beverage (SSB) tax in San Mateo County. This issue is more than a health equity problem, but one of racial justice. The tax is meant to help prevent diabetes and obesity but in doing so will financially impact working class families and youth of color. Therefore, this community forum is a place for youth to voice their support, questions, and concerns.

WHY ATTEND?

  • This community forum is the first of its kind where youth of color have been asked to VOICE their opinion on a local tax.
  • Youth participants who are involved will be able to influence decisions local government makes and ultimately impact the communities they live in.
  • Represent an unheard voice in our community.

WHEN and WHERE?

  • Thursday, August 22, 2013 (5:00-6:30PM)
  • 387 Grand Ave. South San Francisco, CA 94080
  • Dinner is provided.

“At OJJDP Experts Address Best Ways To Tackle Issue of Underage Drinking”

Alcohol is the most commonly used and abused drug in the united states, playing a significant role in the United States’ youth homicide, suicide, and violent crime rates. Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) Administrator Robert Listenbee encourages officials from both law enforcement agencies and the justice system to form partnerships with local community groups in order to address this issue. Listenbee also said that it is vital that advocacy organizations never think of children as “mini adults”.

Advocates need to have a sharp focus on science-based strategies, emphasizing the most effective, evidence-driven approaches. Click here to read more about what OJJDP experts say are the best ways to tackle the issue of underage drinking.
